This two day adventure has become an iconic route on the tourist trail for many backpackers wishing to travel between Thailand and Laos. More than just cheap and convenient transport, it is in itself now a ‘thing to do’ to tick off your travellers bucket list.

Following the Huax Xai border crossing in Thailand, you’ll embark on a two day journey winding lazily down the Mekong river. Each day takes about seven hours with a night in the small town of Pak Beng splitting the journey.

The trip is very much what you make of it. The clue is in the title; this is indeed a slow boat and at times travellers may find themselves feeling restless. The boats are far from luxurious and they do vary in size and comfort; take lots of drinks, snacks, a good book and your camera. You’ll want to snap away at the life you’ll witness on the banks of the Mekong along the way; children swimming in the river, water-buffalo grazing and villages built up into the trees.

There’s a really relaxed atmosphere on the boat; a chance to play cards, read a book or take a nap and, for many, an opportunity to meet fellow travellers.
