Relaxing in Conil de la Frontera, Spain
Conil de la Frontera is a quaint town in southern Spain with beautiful views of the Atlantic ocean. It is about an hour's drive east from Cadiz. Come during the end of May - beginning of June for the Almadraba festival (http://www.cadizturismo.com/gastronomia/rutas-gastronomicas/) and enjoy the freshest tuna (atun de Almadraba). At night you can watch the fishing boats lights twinkle as they catch the prized tuna during their yearly migration into the mediterranean. The sunsets are amazing, the food is great, and the locals friendly.
Things to do:
Witness the 'ronqueo': The ronqueo is the butchering of the tuna. The ronqueo is usually a public event for the first few days/catches of the season (end of May). Some fish are 500 kilos or more and sell for over a million euros! It is quite a spectactle to watch! You will have to wake up early to witness it. Ask the locals beforehand as it changes time/location every year.
Eat the tuna!: There are a few dozen local restaurants that serve the atun de Almadraba. Expect to pay a premium for the delicious fatty belly known as 'ventresca'. The local produce is also of very high quality. Enjoy with a glass of Manzanilla wine or a dry sherry.
Take a stroll: The town itself is beautiful with that classic Mediterranean arquitecture. The beach is several kilometers long and makes for a nice walk, especially in the early evening breeze.
