Escaping to Playa del Carmen

A couple's getaway to Playa del Carmen

We went on a couple’s trip with friends to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Visiting the cliffside ruins of Tulum was at the top of our list of things to do.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most preserved coastal ruins in all of Mexico. I would highly recommend taking a tour to learn more about this advanced ancient Mayan civilization.

After you tour the ruins at Tulum, be sure to take the stairs down to the stunning Paradise Beach. This beach is considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in all of the Riviera Maya.

We also loved visiting Coba where you can rent a bike to ride around and explore the massive expanse of ruins.

Be sure to stop at Nohoch Mul, the tallest pyramid in the Yucatan. It is also one of the few pyramids in the region that visitors are still permitted to climb.

Swimming in a cenote is a must while visiting the Riviera Maya. There are hundreds of these sinkholes that create crystal clear pools found in the region. This cenote is located in the Playacar condo complex where we stayed.

In the evenings we enjoyed strolling along La Quinta Avenida. This pedestrian-only street is at the heart of Playa del Carmen. It is a colorful and lively strip of restaurants, shops, clubs, and local vendors. It is a great place to dine on local cuisine while listening to live music from a rooftop lounge.

We also enjoyed taking a day trip to Cozumel. A short ferry ride will take you to this beautiful island. We loved renting scooters to ride along the coastal road. This was such a memorable trip filled with relaxation, exploration and adventure!
