Exploring The Waterfalls Near Ubud

August // 2019

Compared to the beaches, bamboo houses and the rice terraces, Bali's waterfalls are often overlooked which I think is a real shame. Emma was in Bali for a week and one of her favourite days in Bali was spent exploring two of my favorite, and absolutely INCREDIBLE, lesser known waterfalls, not too far from downtown Ubud!

Tibumana waterfall was the first one on our agenda! Now this beautiful hidden paradise is definitely one of the easiest Bali waterfalls to get to. From the parking area it’s a simple 10 minute walk down to the falls itself, along the way you follow the stream and cross a couple of bamboo bridges. It’s mainly a flat walk making it super safe!

This stunning waterfall is one of the islands best kept secrets, it is mainly visited by locals- however, don’t be fooled by what social media shows you, if you arrive mid afternoon (like we did), you could be slightly disappointed. It’s still one of the less busier places around and absolutely gorgeous no matter how many people are there, but tours arrive after 11am so the afternoon is definitely peak time!

Instagram vs reality

Streaming from the much more touristy falls of Reng Reng, Tibumana is about 4 or 5 metres high and the water is no more than 6 feet deep. When you are there admiring it’s beauty you honestly feel like you are a world away from the chaos of Bali's second largest city, when really you’re only about a 40 minute scooter ride away!

Second on our list for the day was Kanto Lampo. It took us about 10-15 minutes on the scooter from Tibumana waterfall. Another slightly under the radar magical attraction in Bali - this waterfall is easily accessible too (obviously we were feeling lazy this day)! Unlike most other amazing waterfalls, you don’t have to battle through miles of hiking, within 15 minutes from the parking area (mostly downhill) you will reach it!

how amazing is this waterfall!? how amazing is this waterfall!?

Located in the village of Beng Gianyar, this waterfall is much more than just a stream of water running off a cliff. I’ve personally never seen anything quite like it. The rock formations are bazaar, not to mention the path leading to the falls is stunning! You can hear the water crashing in the distance long before you reach the bottom- it’s magical!

Once you get to the bottom be aware you have to get into the water if you want the perfect view of how incredible and large this waterfall is! The water comes up to about your hips and be prepared to zig-zag your way through loads of people- it gets BUSY!

Instagram vs reality... again

So if you’re looking for a couple of underrated, off the beaten track type activities that don’t require too much hiking, I definitely recommend checking out these two gorgeous waterfalls! Like I mentioned before this was one of Emma's and my favourite days we had recently in Bali and I can’t wait to explore around the area of Ubud for some more hidden gems like these!
