Exploring La Havana

10 Day trip to Cuba

We started our first day exploring the area of Vedado and we went to the Necropolis of Cristobal Colon. There was a time when he was buried there but the Spanish authorities reclaimed his body and it was returned to Spain. The entrance is 5 CUC, and while I am not the biggest fan of graves, I really wanted to snap a shot of this one.

Our next stop was “La Plaza de la Revolución”, the official translation would be “The Revolution square”. Here you will  see two huge drawings of Ernesto Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos.

In that same square there is a huge tower that you can visit. The entrance is 1 CUC and if you take the elevator to the top for 3 CUC more. There are great views from above and it is the best  way to see La Habana and all the different districts.

Leaving the Revolution square, you can get lost through La Habana Vieja, which is the old district  of the city. There you can find colorful streets full of local artists and musicians.

Next to the little streets in La Habana Vieja you can find the Chinese district. The ambience there is unique  with so many low-cost food options.

We left the Chinese District and were coming to the end of our first day so to finish it off  we went to the famous Malecon. This is a concrete barrier on the sea shore of La Habana and prevents the waves from pouring over.

It is a must visit at sunset or sunrise. Here you can also see El Morro, which is an ancient Spanish fortress previously occupied by  “los conquistadores”.
