Playa Blanca - Lanzarote

Lanzarote is one of the 8 islands of the Canary archipelago, this is the southwesternmost point of Spain. Lanzarote is one of the closest island to the African continent.

In the South corner of the island there is a small town called Playa Blanca (white beach). It used to be a fisherman's town but with time it grew into one of the most tourist cities, full of big all-inclusive resorts.

The second highest point of the city is the Red Mountain. An old and inactive volcano that you can trek upwards in around one hour from the city. I have to say that the walk isn't for everybody, you have to be a little bit in shape because the climb is a little high and with a lot of loose stones.

Let's remember that this island suffered from multiple volcanic eruptions. The biggest eruption in the archipielago was in 1730 and it lasted 6 years; the last one, in 1824, forced a lot of people to emigrate, covering 6 small towns under ashes and lava.

Once you’re up the hill, the magic begins. In the inside you can see the rim of the old volcano. The close by scene is the city of Playa Blanca, the beaches and the lighthouse. And in front of you, the Fuerteventura Island and the Wolves Island. They seem to be really near. It looks as if you can get there only by swimming (It’s just an optical illusion, don’t even try).

If you’re ever around Playa Blanca and want to see a really good lookout of the city and the sunset, grab lots of water and climb the Red Mountain, you won’t regret the experience, and the view.
