Island Unije

An absolute paradise

Island Unije

Unije is an island in Croatia located in the northern part of the Adriatic Sea. The island is the twentieth largest of all Croatian islands and has numerous beautiful bays and beaches. The name of the island probably comes from the word (he)neios, which means "field" in Greek, which is not surprising given that much of the island is a plain with pastures with sheep and cows freely walking around and a sports airport.

There are only 88 inhabitants on the island and almost all of them are exclusively engaged in tourism and agriculture. Accommodation on the Unije can be found in the rooms and apartments of the locals in the characteristic houses of wide gable facades. There are several inns and taverns in the town, which provide a rich catering offer, especially highlighting the squid, prepared in various ways. The squid is highly prized on the Unije, and in November, the famous Unije Squid - a squid hunting competition - is held here.

You can reach the Unije by ship from Mali Lošinj, or by catamaran from Rijeka, which indicates the good transport connection between the island and the mainland and the surrounding islands. Upon arrival at the Unije, you will immediately notice that there is no car here; the main means of transport are small tractors used by the locals to take their goods off the ship and to cultivate the fields.

Given the sparse population of the island, the Unije is the perfect place for lovers of clean sea and untouched nature. One of the things you might think is that the island is full of nudist beaches because of the many unclothed people on the beaches, but that just speaks to how many people there feel free and blend in with nature.

The crystal blue sea, clean beaches and the aromas of aromatic herbs in the air - an absolute paradise for those who want a break from civilisation.
