Foodguide - Hamburg

A journey through international cuisines

Market time at the famous Isemarkt (Isestraße 1-73, Tue & Fri from 8:30am-14:00pm)

Moin!

After spending 3 months in Hamburg I got the opportunity to experience the great variety of cuisines that are being offered in this beautiful german city. Food was always a big part of my life. Personally, food has something magical, something that makes people happy and brings people together. It also helps people to learn about other cultures, especially on how different ingredients or even cooking methods can be used. Also, by tasting different cuisines one gets to experience a culinary journey aligning with (hopefully) guaranteed post-happiness! So lets deep in!

Asian Cuisines

Being a huge fan of Asian cuisine, this restaurant is a real gem! In the Kokomo Noodle Club, Ramen is presented in an unbelievable delicious and creative way. Even entering the restaurant in the famous area St.Pauli, you automatically feel like standing in a restaurant in Japan. All the dishes are made by hand, without preservatives and the meat is bought on fairtrade farms. What is there more to say? Love, Peace, Ramen!

During my stay in Hamburg, this cozy, little asian restaurant Ume No Hana 梅の花 turned into one of my favourite spots! Combining japanese and vietnamese cuisine this restaurant offers a wide menu, reaching from famous vietnamese soups, the so-called "Phở" , to typical japanese Ramen. In-between main courses you can enjoy yummy Gyozas, Wakame or spring/summer rolls. Ume no hana, I'm crazy Phở you!

To be honest, I could write about so many more exquisite restaurants, but that would just get boring by the time you finish all these pages. However, here is a list of further mind blowing asian restaurants in Hamburg (that I personally LOVED): KINI Korean BBQ, Quan 36, BoK, Cao Asia, Somedimsum, Ban Canteen, Transit or even the Ramen Bar Zipang. Moreover, Hamburg offers also delicious vegan asian restaurants such as the An Vegan or this little hidden gem called Cai Kitchen. I truly believe that you should check them out by yourself and get asianly inspired!

Italian Cuisines

Ciao!

Oh, how much I love good italian spaghetti, cannelloni or even their sweets - but, I tell you, this Foccacceria Apulia will immediately blow your mind! To make it clear, Foccaccia is not Pizza. Let me shortly evaluate: The dough from a Pizza takes around 3-4 hours to fully rise, compared to the Foccaccia dough, which takes up to 40! hours. So, very easy: Foccaccia is like "italian bread" and its just piccobello!

....what is also super delish is their typically filled Italian pastry: Pasticciotto! filled with a lemon-flavoured custard and chocolate cream! If this isn't mouthwatering, than I don't know what else is! After eating this dish I was filled with so much love and happiness, it was almost scary!

Grazie per questo momento!

Bella Italia can also be found in the famous area Schanze. At JILL you are able to get the typical neapolitana Pizza, which is always freshly prepared with high quality products. This makes it to one of the best Pizzas in town. Love at first bite!

Since the Italian Cuisine is represented in mostly every country and usually loved by most of us, here are some further suggestions to eat delicious Pizza e Pasta: Tazzi Pizza, Pizza Bande, Dolce Pasta or at the fancy Pizza Social Club.

Pastry Gems

Fancy a delicious coffee? The Nord Coast Coffee Roastery has truly emerged into an instagrammable, fancy and yet cute coffee place to enjoy yummy treats as well as really, really good coffee! This coffee is more than just a standard coffee. Its own roastery and its wooden, industrial design including tropical plants, makes this place a real gem for hanging out. You can enjoy a vast variety of coffee flavours including aromas such as: chocolate, fruity or nutty ones. One cup, one love!

Törnqvist? This Hotspot is very chique, cool and typical Schanzestyle and has a very minimalistic interior (black and white). Their focus is primarly on coffee, selling flat whites and cappuccinos already during the early waking hours (which is perfect if you're in need of coffee in the morning! #lifesaver). However, since this place is super scandinavian, it also offers yummy treats such as the famous: kannelbullar or super awesome chocolate croissants! It's super hard to just walk past this little coffee place without even just having a coffee to-go. Hej sa länge!

Since Hamburg is such a large city, its pastry and coffee shops have literally boomed over the past years. So here are some other gems that are so worth mentioning (and visting!): Mutterland, Elbgold, Hej papa, Public Coffee Roastery, RAIN Cafeatery, Codos, Teikei, 57 1/2, Kropka and Hermetic Coffee Roasters.

South American Cuisines

When thinking of South American Cuisines I automatically think of Spanish music as well as their super flavoury dishes. So when passing by Macaibo, my heart skipped a beat! This Venezuelan restaurant serves hand-made Arepas with different fillings (vegeterian versions available, without perservatives) and three different sauces. Want to experience the real taste of Venezuela? What are you waiting for, visit Macaibo and dive right into another continent!

Another restaurant is the Salt & Silver. This restaurant serves original Latin American dishes à la Tapas, using high quality products. These dishes are real soulfood and perfect for family-dinners!

Aiaiai! Spanish dishes just make me happy! Muchas gracias!

I hope these insights help you to get a sense of Hamburgs wide range of cuisines from all over the world. Moreover, experiencing all these different cuisines and comparing the different flavours with each other, my sense of looking and tasting of food has evolved more and more over time, making myself also more open towards other countries and cultures! I hope it does that with you too! :)

X,

Tiffy
