You wouldn’t think that North Korea and an area of huge military and political significance would become a tourist attraction, but the DMZ (De-Militarised Zone) between South and North Korea attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. VIP travel offer a half day tour that allows visitors to stop at key sites and learn about the past and present history of this tumultuous country.

The day begins early with a complementary hotel pick up before a coach journey to the DMZ area, about 30km outside of Seoul. As your coach enters the DMZ, your passport is checked by soldiers and you’re taken to the first stop on the tour. It’s here where the significance of the area becomes apparent and you get your first chance to witness the divided peninsular and see how the Korean War tragically split families.

Visitors have the chance to walk through a North Korean infiltration tunnel discovered in the 1990’s; a strange experience down a steep slope to 73m. Freedom Bridge - where North and South Korea exchanged Prisoners of War and a small museum including an education video are part of the tour.

The strangest and most poignant stop takes you to an observatory where you can directly look into North Korea via telescopes. It’s quite surreal looking into the closed country, something most people will never have the chance to do. The tour has an informative guide who expertly briefs you about each stop and provides background information about the DMZ.
