Geothermal spa built on historic volcanic activity

IG: @bethsandland

From the moment you arrive in Rotorua, the smell of egg is overpowering. Not the way to sell a spa is it? Don't let the methane stench put you off though; this city is built upon a hive of geothermal activity! The renowned Polynesian Spa has been serving locals and tourists alike since 1882, offering a rare opportunity to benefit from the old once-volcanic landscape.

There are a number of geothermal pools within the outdoor complex of varying size and temperatures offering stunning views over the lake. You can do more than just relax here; the Maori people discovered therapeutic benefits from the mineral hot springs and the waters are said to relieves aches and ailments.

If you fancy a more active experience, there’s even a full sized geothermal swimming pool to lap up some lengths in, as well as chilled seating areas if you just want to read a book in the sun.

Changing rooms, lockers and showers are included in the ticket price. Just make sure you wear old swimwear as the smell of sulphur is hard to wash out!
