Where to Have Coffee in New York

Our Top Coffee Shops and Photography Spots in NYC

1. Devoción | 69 Grand St, Brooklyn, NY 11249

"Devoción ensures its coffee’s supreme purity, freshness and integrity. You’ll taste the difference in a single sip."

Devoción is an awesome coffee shop. Their coffee roaster sits right inside the front door behind big glass windows, letting you witness just how fresh the coffee is before you even reach the counter. It’s a bustling spot full of people working (though I didn’t see any outlets to charge anything!). We had to wait for a little for a seat but it was well worth it for the delicious, fresh coffee on offer. By fresh they mean it may have been picked right from the coffee plant in Colombia as close as a week ago. Amazing. Staff that seemed to love the shop as much as the customers. Be sure to ask about the new coffees on offer and maybe pick up a bag to take away with you!

2. Sey Coffee | 18 Grattan St, Brooklyn, NY 11206

“We are in pursuit of delivering a selection of the finest, most dynamic, and complex coffees we can by developing, supporting, and progressing relationships throughout the supply chain.”

Sey is a bright, airy and plant-filled Brooklyn cafe, serving up some incredible coffee. They source everything seasonally, showcasing a variety of diverse, but always delicious, coffee all year round. All drinks are served on neat wooden boards with a glass of sparkling water accompanying it to help cleanse your palette. It’s their attention to detail in both the interior design and the approach to coffee drinking that makes them stand out from the crowd.

3. Blue Bottle Coffee | 101 University Pl, New York, NY 10003

"Blue Bottle Coffee has grown to a network of cafes across the U.S., Japan, and Korea. We are still united by the simple purpose of getting great coffee to everyone who asks for it."

If you like great coffee you’ve most probably heard of Blue Bottle. Founded in 1999 in a shed in San Francisco it is now one of the fastest growing coffee shops in the world. It’s easy to see why. The space is beautifully minimal, with all the attention given to the coffee. We were living the dream with this Blue Bottle Cafe being just a few steps away from our apartment. We got our usual flat white which was as great as ever. We also gave their cold brew concentrate a go, which drips for 12 hours through this awesome looking contraption below! Designed to be drunk like whisky over a large cube of ice. If you find it too strong just dilute with 3 part water to 1 part concentrate.

4. Stumptown Coffee Roasters | 30 W 8th St, New York, NY 10011

"No region we buy from is the same as another, and it's important to approach each as a unique relationship so that we can understand the challenges that person or entity faces – whether it's a single producer, association, mill or exporter. With our purchases, we hope to offer stability so that our partners can focus on quality."

Another of America’s biggest coffee shops. We loved the interior of Stumptown coffee on 30 West 8th with a rustic and antique vibe. Whenever we go to Stumptown there never seems to be any seats (which I guess is a good thing!) so we drop in, get a takeaway flat white, and a couple of their Chocolate Cold Brew Coffees. I would travel back to New York just to drink another one of those cold brews. I just wish they sold them in a full-sized milk carton!

5. Happy Bones | 394 Broome St, New York, NY 10013

"Our obsession with great coffee comes from growing up in New Zealand, which has had a thriving espresso culture for two decades. We opened our first store in Little Italy as homage to the legacy and traditions of the country that invented espresso. And we’re based in New York because it’s a city that rewards excellence, which is what we strive for in every coffee we serve."

A cool little space at 394 Broome Street. They describe themselves pretty nicely on their website, “New York City is about energy and creativity, and Happy Bones exists to inspire and energize New Yorkers. We start with the best coffee and the best baristas in the city, add amazing local art, and bring you the most interesting publications from the world over.”

Grab a coffee, a stool, and a magazine, and you’re sorted for the morning. A new favourite plan of ours in NYC. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.
