How to Navigate Gargano

Summer is on its way, and if you need a little break I’ve got the right place for you.

The Gargano is the whole area of Puglia north that protrudes from the heel on the map, and four days are really not enough to see all the things that it can offer. Cliffs overlooking the sea, the Umbrian forest, and beautiful bays are just some of the things you can see during your stay.

If you are coming from the south of Apulia, one of the firsts stop you must make is the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Siponto which houses the artwork entitled “Where the art reconstructs time” by Edoardo Tresoldi, a reconstruction of the early Christian basilica made entirely in wire mesh.

This place is really breathtaking and needs to be visited. It doesn't take long to see the whole thing.

Going towards Gargano, you’ll find a little pretty town called “Mattinata” which offers beautiful views of the coastline and bays.

Take a walk along the cliffs to see the entire Varcaro coast. Enjoy the well equipped and affordable beaches.

Remember that you will really need a car if you choose to visit here. Otherwise, there really aren't many ways to get around and explore.

Continuing the journey towards Vieste, take note that there are two different roads that lead you there.

The first one goes through the Umbrian forest. I like this route however it’s a very dangerous road and you will come across some wild animals.

The second one, it’s the coastal route. This road has a breathtaking landscape, and you’ll find a little place called Torre San Felice.

Leave your car and walk for a while.

This is one of the most beautiful panoramic places in this zone, don’t miss it!

We’re finally in Vieste, and the first stop is Pizzomunno! A limestone monolith that stands in all its grandeur almost as a guard of Vieste and for its charm has become the very symbol of the city. Some legends are also related to it.

The rest of the city is almost entirely developed in its historic center (entirely closed to traffic), at the top of which you can admire the Trabucco of Punta San Francesco.

Unfortunately, as I said before, four days is really not enough to admire all these beautiful things. Plan to stay longer and enjoy!

See you again Gargano!
