Things I Learned About Solo Travelling While Backpacking Through Europe

At the age of 12, I took my first-ever trip to London with my dad. Ever since, solo travelling has become one of the few things on my wishlist.

I’ve always been a wanderer by heart. However, I never dared to pick up the backpack and start travelling, until recently.

Yup!

At the age of 23, after the exhausting weeks at work, I finally did it. Took a week off, booked my tickets, packed my bags, and started my solo travelling journey through Europe. My first stop was Germany, and from there I went off to Paris, France, and Italy.

While the experience was nothing short of amazing, I learned a few valuable lessons that prepared me for future adventures.

So, if you're planning your first solo trip and feeling nervous, be sure to read the blog.

The idea of travelling alone was daunting enough for me as I’ve never stepped outside of my city. I was anxious with the travel jitters settling in the pit of my stomach.

Will I get lost? Will I be able to handle the challenges?

These were the questions swirling in my mind.

However, when I arrived on my first day, everything vanished into thin air. Of course, some things didn’t go as I expected. But the experience was incredible.

Here’s what I learned while backpacking through Europe.

I am a huge introvert. So, talking to strangers, asking for help, or making friends was something I never wanted to do while travelling.

But not everything happens as you plan.

So, ladies, always remember that if you are going solo, getting out of your shell is essential. It will take your travelling experience to a whole new level.

Always remember you are going to be challenged to a whole new level, and you have to be prepared for it.

My wardrobe was a bust for my solo travel. You’ll be shocked to know that I packed only one pair of Converse, no warmer jacket, and too many outfit options.

You should look cute and aesthetic in your pictures. But that will not be comfortable enough if you are travelling.

I learned that the hard way. My converse was so uncomfortable that it caused blisters on my feet, and I had to travel in pain.

You should pack light. Here’s what you ladies should carry with you:

  • T-shirts, long sleeve shirts, a jacket, and a raincoat (Cause in Europe, especially in Germany, the weather changes in a blink)

  • You’ll have to walk to reach the tourist destinations. Hence, having comfortable shoes that won’t cause blisters or burn holes through the soles is essential.

  • Choose clothing items that can be mixed and matched.

  • Always research the weather for the location you are travelling to.

When I was planning to travel to Europe, all I heard from my friends and relatives was that it was going to be lonely. What will you do?

While I won’t lie that solo travelling can be lonely, making you homesick and missing your family more than ever, you have to learn to enjoy your own company.

That’s what I did.

The first two days were hard for me. After that, I discovered the activities I could do by myself. For example:

  • I explored Retiro Park in Madrid

  • Furthermore, I booked myself a cooking class to learn how to cook European cuisine.

  • Planned a walking tour to explore more about the rich culture and history.

Trust me! Enjoying your own company is the best idea.

One of the best things about solo travelling is that you will have to face challenges and obstacles yourself.

And they teach you a lot about yourself.

During my backpacking journey through Europe, I truly discovered my strengths and weaknesses. Furthermore, I learned about my true feelings, trusted my instincts, and gained the confidence to handle everything by myself.

While I was in Germany, I started journaling. Mostly, my nights ended with spilling my thoughts about what went on during the day, how I handled the things, and what I wished I knew before I booked the adventures.

Looking back, these pages become a mirror to see how much I’ve grown since. And lately, I am thinking of turning these journal entries into an eBook. That's why I am exploring the book writing services near me. So, for my solo travelers, if it’s your first time travelling somewhere, don’t forget to document your experience. They will become the memories you cherish.

While travelling, you will find yourself in situations that test your patience, make you cry (I’ve done that a lot), and leave you wondering if it was all worth it.

But, trust me! You are more capable than you think.

While it might feel a bit uncomfortable about what you are going through, once you’ve handled the situation, you’ll be relieved and know what to do in other difficult situations.

Never, I repeat, solo travel without budgeting everything properly. In the first few days while travelling, I spent without any worries.

Think 5-star Michigan restaurants, booking rides, buying souvenirs, etc. But then I realized I was short on cash.

Therefore, I suggest to all the Ladies out there who are thinking of travelling solo, budget properly. Consider opting for the cheaper options like:

  • Air Bnbs for staying

  • Opt for walking instead of transportation.

  • Eat from local stands.

One thing I advise all the female solo travellers is to be aware of your surroundings. You want to ensure your safety while making the most of your travel.

Moreover, learn to trust your instincts, say no to strangers offering free food, and be wary of scams. While Germany is entirely safe, it is better to take precautions.

So, to recap, here’s what I learned while solo travelling through Europe:

  • Always get out of your comfort zone

  • Focus on packing the right things

  • Learn to enjoy your own company

  • Document your thoughts

  • Consistently budget your expenses.

  • Be aware of your surroundings.

  • Believe in yourself.

Solo travelling not only provides you with unique experiences but also is a great chance for self-discovery. If you have been thinking of backpacking and travelling, but didn’t have the guts, stop worrying for once, book your tickets, and start your journey. This is a lifetime opportunity that you don’t want to miss.
