Camogli

An Underrated Gem Near Cinque Terre...

A few years ago I was on a photographic tour in Liguria, covering renowned spots like Portofino and Cinque Terre. On our last day, the receptionist at our hotel saw us with our camera gear and suggested that we pay a visit to Camogli, a small town by the sea that, according to him “is so underrated, yet amazing with its colors”. So, a few hours before leaving, we hopped in our car for the 30 minute drive to Camogli. Upon arriving, the sight before our eyes left us speechless.

While we only had the time to snap some photos and eat a gelato, the town left a lasting impression on me. In the intervening years Camogli has gained a lot of attention on various social media networks, so when I landed an assignment in the area last year, I couldn’t resist coming back.

The town itself lies on a small bay with incredibly blue waters. A huge wall of colourful houses (something very typical in Liguria) stands over the black pebble beach. One of my favorite things to do in Camogli is to walk around the small marina and alleys, while tasting a slice of focaccia di Recco, a delicious flatbread seasoned with olive oil and melted cheese. Or, perhaps, sit at one of the many cute restaurants for some trofie al pesto (a short and twisted pasta traditionally served with pesto) and a bottle of white wine.
