Civita Di Bagnoregio

A Must On Everyone’s Bucket List

Unique

As the bus was traveling through the woods and the fields, I wondered how I would have felt before the sight of this small village in central Lazio. It was a warm Sunday in May, and I had chosen to visit this tiny place due to my girlfriend’s suggestion. Of course, being an active Instagram user, I had already known Civita di Bagnoregio thanks to the many postcards seen over the years. Sitting on a plateau of friable volcanic tuff, Civita is frequently named “The Dying Town” because of the incessant erosion. Over the centuries this forced most of its population to move away, and nowadays there’s only a handful of citizens here (a few dozen more populate the village in the summertime).

The view from Bagnoregio is as impressive as one may expect. Photos don’t give justice to this gem, and a visit should be on every serious traveler's list when visiting Italy.

A distinctive trait of Civita is the complete lack of roads: a footbridge is the only way to access its beautiful historic centre, where you can spot lots of details from its Etruscan past, although the general aesthetic of it spans across centuries.

The place is very well preserved despite a recent revival in tourism that constantly brings crowds from all over the world. This sometimes makes local residents a little on edge as they really value their privacy. Several nice restaurants and cozy bed & breakfasts are available, making this village a very good choice for a romantic weekend.
