Ostuni, Puglia, Italy

The White City

Yes, this is Italy

As part of a larger tour I made across Puglia a couple years ago, I had to stop by Ostuni. Ostuni is a unique town that resembles a bright cap rising up right from the flat plains near the southern coast of Italy. Its whitewashed defensive walls and houses in the old town with many winding streets, steps and beautifully decorated, colorful window frames can make you think you're somewhere in Greece.

Just silence Just silence

Although Ostuni is one of the main attractions in Puglia, it's less known than Polignano a Mare or Alberobello famous for its cone-shaped Trulli houses, but it's definitely not less worth a visit - so do include it in your itinerary to Italy - especially in the winter time.

Also known as “The White City”, because of the white lime tones of its historic center, Ostuni stands on a 600-feet hill overlooking the nearby Adriatic coastline and I must say that Mediterranean vibes ooze from every corner and every alley.

Nothing more Italian than this Nothing more Italian than this

You could definitely spend an entire morning (I suggest you to get out of your Airbnb or bed and breakfast early to have the town all for yourself) or afternoon wandering around and cherishing the slow life of Apulian people, making pasta or putting laundry out to dry.

I wonder who lives behind that door I wonder who lives behind that door

Details of its ancient past, baroque and medieval, can be found everywhere across the city in churches and old palaces. Night life is vibrant with tons of places where you can eat, enjoy a gelato or sip a cocktail.
