Climbing The Majestic Lion's Rock

Must do while in Sigiriya

Lion's Rock

Written by Arijana Tkalčec

Lion's Rock is one of the most important historical monuments and most visited locations in Sri Lanka. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage site in 1982. Locals even consider it as Eighth Wonder of the World. The fortress complex includes ruins of the palace, gardens, ponds, canals, etc. The palace is built at the rock plateau 370 meters above sea level and offers breathtaking views on its surroundings. It is located between two towns, Dambulla and Habarane.

It is easy to find the way to the main entrance of Lion's Rock as you have signs leading to it everywhere. It opens at 6:30 am and I suggest you come even a bit earlier so you can be sure you'll be one of the first people there. Plus, it's not that hot in the early morning. Tickets for tourists are sold at Office museum which is way back from the entrance. The tickets cost $40 and there is a small queue even that early. Make sure to put lots of sunscreens and take plenty of water. Plastic bottles are not allowed so be sure to take a reusable one. But you also have drinkable water which you can fill halfway to the top, the only problem is that it's a bit hot. Wear sneakers for a much easier climb on the narrow stairs.

The climb there is not that hard but there are many MANY stairs (1200+ to be precise) so it can be a bit hard at some parts. It took us around 35 minutes to reach the top with a moderate pace and almost no stopping at all. So if you go slowly and take a rest once in a while it will probably take you an hour to climb. Be careful in the parts with wasps signs as you have to be quiet if they fly around so you don't get attacked. If you follow the instructions, nothing will happen, it's not that scary, so don't worry. The rocks along the way are covered with monkey poop so use the climbing handles along the stairs.

As we came there pretty early and it didn't take us long to reach the top we were amongst the first ones there and had it all for ourselves for like 20 minutes. Around 8 am it is already full of people. We used that opportunity to take photos and videos and just enjoy the view which was priceless. Wherever you look you can see the jungle. Amazing! If you're visiting Sri Lanka, this is a must.
