Mars - aka Wadi Rum

2019 // Jordan

This place was a spot that I had been dreaming of visiting for more years than I can remember. Basically since I first watched starwars as a young kid, this was a destination I wanted to see for myself. Wadi Rum has been the movie set location for a ton of hollywood productions, and it is entirely understandable why! It’s so vast, massive and the rock formations don’t make any sense in terms of how they came to be, but are so stunning!

Basically Tatooine (Star Wars) Basically Tatooine (Star Wars)

cant explain these formations cant explain these formations

This desert is located in the beautiful country of Jordan, in the South West corner, near the Saudi Arabian border. It is really hard to explain the feeling of this place because it is so unique and just so different from any other desert I have ever seen. The colour of the sand is so perfectly rosy and all the clusters of rock stand in such sharp contrast to the otherwise endless seeming stretches of sand dunes.

The craziest thing about this place is that it used to be entirely inhabited by nomads who seem to have known this place inside out, much like many other parts of Jordan. It seems like an impossible task to understand this place and navigate it, but they would use rock formations and carvings on these rocks to guide them through the massive desert.

If you visit now, the popular way of exploring is by 4x4 pickup truck or Jeep, where you will find yourself cruising up and down gorgeous sand dunes for what seems like an endless stretch of desert – cruising through gorgeous valleys and gorges, looking up at rock that seems to have fallen from the sky in the most peculiar yet beautiful way.

I only had 24 hours in Wadi Rum last time I went and it definitely wasn’t enough! Jordan in general seems to hold so much beauty, and I want to go back as soon as possible to visit again and explore more of this incredible country and location!

Thanks for reading along, hope you enjoyed and do let me know if you have any questions!
