A dip in Skorpios Bay

Skorpios Island, Ionian Sea

Empty beach at 10am

We came to Lefkada with no clues and no concrete plan except to hit the few famous beaches them travel blogs suggested. So when our apartment owner offered us a private boat to rent for a day, we definitely said yes and hopped on the boat with a little map and little know-how.

We were advised to head to Skorpios Bay first, a small bay on Skorpios Island to stop and swim. Later did we know that Skorpios Island is a private island previously owned by the Greek billionaire Aristotle Onassis. The island is where he married late First Lady of the US, Jacqueline Kennedy in 1968. It was later bought by a Russian billionaire as a gift to his daughter and remains as a private property to this date.

The coastline The coastline

The island is green, filled with mediterranean trees and bushes that gives it a mysterious, uninhabited look. The view of the port is blocked by it’s sister island Skorpidi but we were sure it was the port because there was a large luxurious yacht parked before it. We couldn’t make out much of the infrastructure on the island except for the little white house (said to be the Myconos House) in front of the public bay. It was our only guide that it's the bay where we're allowed to swim into since there was no boat or individuals around when we reached it.

This water!!! This water!!!

But not for long though! Soon, the other private boats came but this didn’t hinder us from dipping into the inviting waters.

Pebble beach Pebble beach

White pebble beach and crystal clear waters! White pebble beach and crystal clear waters!

Our magical time has to end after an hour of though. We decided to leave the beach for the cave in Meganisi. We sailed back in the afternoon but weren’t able to swim anymore because there was a huge tourist boat with lots of people diving from it's deck and scared us away.
