24 Hours In Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a fantastic city for a short break or layover, with plenty of things to see, do and eat. We try to get to Hong Kong a couple of times a year whilst out in Asia, and here are my favourite things to do in 24 hours in the city.

Early morning is the best time to visit Instagram Pier and watch the sunrise over the city. The locals come to the waterfront at this time to exercise and catch up with their friends, so it’s also a great place to people watch. Bring your 70-200mm to shoot Victoria Harbour with the sun glowing off the buildings.

After you’ve photographed until your heart is content, head to Choi Hung, a particularly cool spot if you’re into lifestyle photography. Definitely aim to go in the morning on a week day, as this spot gets busy fast. The multicoloured buildings and basketball court make for an awesome photo, and if lifestyle photography isn’t your thing, this spot is also a great place to watch the extremes people go to to get the perfect Instagram shot. Afterwards, I’d highly recommend Din Tai Fung for an early lunch, which is an absolute must when in Hong Kong!

There’s no better place to watch the spend the afternoon and watch the sunset than Lion Rock, with panoramic views over the city. The hike up is on the gruelling end of an easy hike, so leave plenty of time to get up there. Trust me, though, the views from the top are well worth it. There are so many guides on how to get there and which route to take online, so I won’t bore you with the details, but a zoom lens is a must, particularly as the sky turns dark. You’ll also want to take a tripod and a very big bottle of water with you - don’t forget!

An afternoon spent atop Lion Rock

After nightfall, make your way to Quarry Bay to witness the building complex in the best light. This area has become incredibly popular in the last few years, and when you arrive you’ll see why. You have to lie on the floor to get a cool look-up shot, so don’t wear your best clothes. Also, it’s so important to be quiet and respectful to the residents, as so many people who visit here are not.

And, if you have time, Temple Street is another great night photography spot. Make your way to the car park at the end of the street and photograph the neon lights until your heart is content!
